A quick Link

This op-ed piece from the New York Times relates back to my first two musings, and I thought I would share.

  1. Can I just comment on the Koran burning nonsense in Florida?

I am sad and angry and overwhelmed and very frightened by this misuse of gospel principals AND the news media for giving wings to such an abominable and worthless story. This is STRESSING ME OUT!

Ron, who is always the opposite voice when I'm stressing, tells me that getting upset is not going to make any difference. I'm sure he's right, but I AM worried. I have a son-in-law in Afghanistan. Lots of people have family serving there. It's not fair to treat them (or anyone) like 'collateral'.

And yes, I recognize that zealots burn Bibles around the world - but since I know that it's what written, not the actual paper that make it sacred, I refuse to take it personally. It's called turning the other cheek.

I appreciate the Muslim leader in Florida urging his people to this act by going out and doing good in the community rather than by confronting and spreading the anger. It's good advice. But I'm still going to be very clear in my conviction: Bad.....very, very bad.

One more personal fuss: Why oh WHY do so many religious crazies have to have the name JONES? Ughhhhhhhy

    Okay, deep breaths. In....out.....in.....out.....

Gospel principles have been misused by every religion everywhere since time began. Most religions teach peace and harmony, most people ignore that. The natural man reacts with hate and fear to things that are different. It's a pack mentality thing that protected us back when we were living in caves, but in the modern world, it is something we have to rise above if we as a human race are to survive.
And the media has been hard hit in the last decade or so, and they feel focusing on sensational non-stories will get them more viewers, thus more advertisers, thus more money. It's all about cash. For the most part, (I would hazard to say the whole, in fact) news organizations have ceased to be the source of facts, leaving us as a population with the responsibility to find the truth for ourselves.
As far as our last name is concerned, no matter how many nutjobs named Jones there are, the honor of our clan will always be protected by one great man...

  3. All hail Tom Jones...I will try to hold on to his light in the face of all darkness. In his immortal words shall I sing:

    "Bama Lama Bama Loo"

Which I think is Welsh for "Pardon me lady, but where's the closest bathroom?"

  4. Actually, I am pretty sure the correct translation is "Pardon me lady, please throw your lacy underthings onstage" but I think that linguistics are a bit beyond the scope of this blog.
